About the Seminar

With the view to highlight the advancements and applications in Forming Technologies, Indian Machine Tool Manufacturers' Association (IMTMA) is organising a one day “International Seminar on Forming Technology” on 18th January 2024, a day before IMTEX FORMING 2024 exhibition, at BIEC (Bangalore International Exhibition Centre). The wide coverage of topics and new developments showcased at the seminar could be readily adopted to improve productivity and stay updated with the market trends.

Seminar Highlights

“New developments in laser remote welding”, Scansonic GmbH, Germany

Laser remote welding is a technology slated to replace spot welding, with advantages of accessibility, lesser flange width and speed since line-of-sight approach is required for shooting Laser from distance of over 1m covering larger sweep area by changing just the mirror angle. There are certain recent development of bridging gaps by welding, seam tracking and use of multiple Laser Beams for rapid scanning.

“Adaptive sheet bending at Press Brake”, Bystronics, India

Concept of inspection based adaptive bending process at Press Brake. The variabilities of sheet thickness, stress-strain plot, placement of tool and blank that get compensated through the adaptive process for consistent quality outcome. How does it compare and improve the predictive Simulation based working. Case Study of how it saves the cycle time in different situations.

“Advances in sheet welding technology”, Fronius, India

New lesser known developments in sheet welding technology such as Cold Metal Transfer ( CMT ) for thermal distortion less joining of sheets including joining of aluminum to copper. Other techniques such as two wire welding for productivity and speed, newfound capability of wide and variable gap welding, seam tracking etc. Automation in keeping welding records as pertraceability requirements.

“Dynamic beam mode in laser cutting”, Proteck, India

Beam mode is the radial energy distribution curve within the laser spot and different profiles of beam mode are optimal for cutting different materials and thicknesses. There is a new development in laser cutting machine controls where the beam mode could be dynamically and adaptively altered for cutting a mix of different sheets. Case studies and comparative advantages.

“Forecasting joint quality: Simulation of sheet joining”, Hexagon, India

Finite Element Analysis based simulation for joining sheets and plates by welding, spot welding, clinching, hemming and riveting. Prediction of stresses, distortion, metallurgical transition and strength. Case studies and examples. Experience based refinement of base data for accuracy of forecasting. How sequence of welding and clamping makes a difference? Assistance for process optimization and fixture design.

“Hollow drive train elements for EVs by Rotary Swaging and Axial Forming Technology”, FELSS, Germany

Rotary Swaging and Axial Forming Technologies enable manufacturing of drive train and structural elements such as steering column through tubular blanks using Forming technologies rather than machining. For EVs this translates directly into light weighting and consequent enhancement in mileage / charge.

“Presses with I4 compatibility for progressive & transfer dies”, ISGEC, India

Special features and specs of presses meant for progressive dies and transfer dies. Their integration with automation and Industry 4.0 compatibilityfeatures. Examples and case studies.

“Die Life enhancement with Laser Cladding”, TRUMPF, India

Worn out Die and Mold surfaces could now be rebuilt / modified through the process of Laser Cladding, where metal powder gets thrown at the surface through a nozzle and gets fused on the fly by a Laser Spot. Several millimeters of layer or layers could be built up. The process is done by Robot possibly on a linear axis. Layers deposited could be re-machined.

“Optimal milling data preparation for draw dies”, Autoform, India

The newly introduced features in sheet forming simulation, where oversimplification and idealization based theoretical models are further refined with inclusion of practical considerations of variability of presses, dies, shrinkage and spring-back of part. The cutter path generated for milling of draw dies precludes many issues and time taken to prove the dies.

“Industry 4 for Stamping Applications”, Marposs, Germany

Monitoring solutions for Progressive Dies, variety of presses and control Console with customized dashboard and process monitoring feature for abnormality detection in press stroke. Sensors and their best placement into press and Die.

“Process and simulation for roll forming”, Data M, Germany

Software for simulation of roll forming line COPRA, new features, case studies illustrating the benefits. Overview and correlation with roll forming process and equipment features and typical defects and quality / productivity issues.

“Fuel cell technology - Opportunities and challenges in production of bipolar plates”, Industrial Interface India (3i)

Special challenges and defects in forming shallow intricate grooves in thin bipolar plates forfuel cells / hydrogen cells and the proven results with sheet hydroforming process. Overview of market growth and potential offuel cell demand.

“Optimization of Dies with modular, intelligent, compact aggregates”, FIBRO, Germany

There are smart sensors which could monitor pressure in Nitrogen Spring in the Die, which dynamically send readings to a surveillance software. There are compact cams and hydraulic cams and active elements which enable integrating more functionality within same Die and making castings smaller.
